The Cases - Οι Πτώσεις

Lesson 12 - Greek Grammar

Let's try to explain this one. As we speak, the nouns and adjectives that we use, change forms. They can change to four different forms for the singular and four for the plural.
These different forms are the Cases ( οι πτώσεις ).
The Cases are:

Table 12.1

-Ονομαστική - Nominative. This is the case of the subject (Who).
-Γενική - Possessive. This shows possession (Whose).
-Αιτιατική - Accusative. This is the case of the object. (Whom/what).
-Κλητική - Vocative. This is the case that we use to call someone.

Here are some examples:

Table 12.2

Ο Νίκος διαβάζει (Nick is reading). The noun (Nick) is in the nominative case because we can ask -who's reading?-
Το χέρι του Νίκου (The hand of Nick). The noun (Nick) is in the Possessive case because the -hand- belongs to Nick (Whose is it?).
Βλέπω το(ν) Νίκο (I see Nick). The noun (Nick) is in the Accusative case because we can ask -whom do you see- (The action is transferred to the object).
Νίκο, που πηγαίνεις; (Nick, where are you going?). The noun (Nick) is in the Vocative case because it addresses -Nick- (call).

I hope you understand all of these. I'm sure you have a lot of questions. In the next few lessons, we'll examine the declension of the articles (an easy one) and the declension of the *regular nouns. This is where you will get a better understanding of the usage of the cases.
