Τα Βοηθητικά Ρήματα
The Auxiliary Verbs

Lesson 33 - Greek Grammar

The verbs είμαι (Be) and έχω (have) are called Auxiliary Verbs (Τα Βοηθητικά Ρήματα) because they help to form different tenses. The following tables show the conjugation of the Present and Past Continuous of these verbs.

Table 33.1
Present Past Continuous
είμαι (I am) ήμουν or ήμουνα (I was)
είσαι (you are) ήσουν or ήσουνα (you were)
είναι (he,she it is) ήταν or ήτανε (he, she, it was)
είμαστε (we are) ήμαστε (we were)
είστε (you are) ήσαστε (you were)
είναι (they are) ήταν or ήτανε (they were)

The verb "είμαι" has Past Simple tense. It takes it from the Verb "υπάρχω (exist)", and that tense is "υπήρξα".
Don't forget; You can use the personal pronouns if you want.

Table 33.2
Present Past Continuous
έχω (I have) είχα (I had)
έχεις (you have) είχες (you had)
έχει (he,she it has) είχε (he, she, it had)
έχομε or έχουμε (we have) είχαμε (we had)
έχετε (you have) είχατε (you had)
έχουν or έχουνε(they have) είχαν or είχανε (they had)

The verb "έχω" does not have a Past Simple tense.
