Lesson 4
Sentences in Past Continuous

In Greek, just like in English, the Past Continuous lets us create sentences that describe something that happened in the past, not for a moment, but continuously.

The Sentence

"I was going to the store"

The Basic Pattern

Pronoun verb in Past Continuous noun, verb or Adjective.

The Translation

In English Iwas goingto the store.
In Greek εγώ πήγαινα στο μαγαζί.

Similar Sentences

In English Iwas sleeping
In Greek εγώ κοιμόμουν or κοιμόμουνα

In English Iwas readingthis book.
In Greek εγώ διάβαζα αυτό το βιβλίο.

In English Theywere running in themarathon.
In Greek Αυτοί έτρεχαν στο Μαραθώνιο.

Past Continuous with two verbs.

In English Iwas goingto read.
In Greek εγώ πήγαινα να διαβάσω.

In English Theywere goingto play.
In Greek Αυτοί πήγαιναν να παίξουν.

Did you notice in the above two examples that the second verb is translated as subjunctive mood of the past simple? Use the subjunctive mood of the Present Tense when the action is continuous. Use the subjunctive mood of the Past Tense when the action takes place once. Use the appropriate voice.

Past Continuous with an Adjective or an Adverb.

In English Wewere playingwell
In Greek εμείς παίζαμε καλά

In English Shewassmart.
In Greek Αυτή ήταν έξυπνη.
