   After traveling many days Odysseus and his ships stopped at an island. The island was close to the island of the Cyclops (Κύκλωπες). They anchored there and they slept on the beach.
   The Cyclops were giants with one eye only in the forehead. They were not civilized. They did not know anything about agriculture but they had flocks of sheep and goats; they were shepherds. The biggest and the wildest of all was Polyphemus (Πολύφημος), son of god Poseidon.

   When they woke up, Odysseus decided to go with his ship and see what kind of people the Cyclops were. He chose 12 of his companions, took some wine and food and they left. They docked close to the beach. Near there, they saw a cave. They entered the cave. Nobody was there, but the cave was full of different kinds of cheeses and some young sheep and goats. His companions wanted to leave, but he did not listen to them. They stayed there and waited.

   After a little while the Cyclop (Polyphemus) came into the cave. He put his flock in the cave and rolled a huge rock in front of the entrance. He lit a fire. When the fire became bigger and the cave lit up, he saw Odysseus and the others.
"Who are you?" he asked.
"We are Greeks, we are coming from Troy." Odysseus answered.
Odysseus told him all that they had been through and asked for refuge. Polyphemus did not answer. He took two of Odysseus' companions, hit them on the ground, cooked them and ate them. Then he went to sleep. Odysseus decided to kill him but he thought that they would be trapped in the cave, because none of them could move the rock from the entrance.

   Αφού ταξίδευαν πολλές μέρες ο Οδυσσέας και τα πλοία του σταμάτησαν σε ένα νησί. Το νησί αυτό ήταν κοντά στο νησί των Κυκλώπων. Άραξαν εκεί και κοιμήθηκαν στην παραλία.
   Οι Κύκλωπες ήταν γίγαντες με μόνο ένα μάτι στο μέτωπο. Δεν ήταν πολιτισμένοι. Δεν ήξεραν τίποτε γύρω από γεωργία αλλά είχαν κοπάδια με πρόβατα και γίδια, ήταν βοσκοί. Ο μεγαλύτερος και πιο άγριος απ' όλους ήταν ο Πολύφημος, γιος του θεού Ποσειδώνα.

   Όταν ξύπνησαν, ο Οδυσσέας αποφάσισε να πάει με το καράβι του να δει τι είδος άνθρωποι ήταν οι Κύκλωπες. Διάλεξε 12 συντρόφους, πήρε λίγο κρασί και φαγητό και έφυγαν. Άραξαν κοντά στην αμμουδιά. Κοντά εκεί, είδαν μια σπηλιά. Μπήκαν στην σπηλιά. δεν ήταν κανένας εκεί, αλλά η σπηλιά ήταν γεμάτη με διάφορα είδη τυριών και μερικά μικρά πρόβατα και γίδια. Οι σύντροφοί του ήθελαν να φύγουν, αλλά ο Οδυσσέας δεν τους άκουσε. Έμειναν εκεί και περίμεναν.

   Μετά από λίγο ο Κύκλωπας ήρθε στη σπηλιά. Έβαλε το κοπάδι του στη σπηλιά και κύλησε έναν πελώριο βράχο μπροστά από την είσοδο. Άναψε φωτιά. Όταν η φωτιά μεγάλωσε και η σπηλιά φώτισε, είδε τον Οδυσσέα και τους άλλους.
"Ποιος είσαι εσύ;" ρώτησε.
"Είμαστε Έλληνες, ερχόμαστε από την Τροία." απάντησε ο Οδυσσέας.
Ο Οδυσσέας του είπε όλα όσα είχαν περάσει και του ζήτησε καταφύγιο. Ο Πολύφημος δεν απάντησε. Πήρε δύο από τους συντρόφους του Οδυσσέα, τους χτύπησε στο έδαφος, τους μαγείρεψε και τους έφαγε. Τότε πήγε για ύπνο. Ο Οδυσσέας αποφάσισε να τον σκοτώσει αλλά σκέφτηκε πως θα ήταν παγιδευμένοι στην σπηλιά, γιατί κανένας τους δεν μπορούσε να κινήσει τον βράχο από την είσοδο.
