The Importance of the Accent

Grammar Extras

The accent has an important role in the pronunciation and the meaning of the Greek words. There are many words that are spelled exactly the same and what they mean, depends on the position of the accent.
Look at the following examples:
γέρος (GE-ros) = old, but γερός (ge-ROS) = strong, healthy
μίσος (MI-sos) = hatred, but μισός (mi-SOS) = half
κάλος (KA-los) = callus, but καλός (ka-LOS) = good

In the words above we moved the access, and their meaning changed. That's why you should learn to read and position the accent correctly when you read, and when you write.
