Spelling is an important aspect of the Greek language. It is especially important when you are writing or reading Greek words and sentences! Take for example these two words: "βάζω" and "βάζο".
The first one ends in "ω", it's a verb and it means "I put".
The second one ends in "ο", it's a noun and means "vase".
As you can see from this example the correct spelling of the word can help us with its meaning!

We put together a few simple rules that can help you get some of the spelling correct. Remember that there are exceptions to some of these rules.

Adjectives and Nouns

  • All Masculine nouns that end in "-os" (in the Nominative Singular case) are always spelled with an omicron "o", never an "ω".
  • Masculine nouns that end in "-ees" (in the Nominative Singular case) are always spelled with an eta "η".
  • Feminine nouns that end in "-ee" (in the Nominative Singular case) are always spelled with an eta "η".
  • Feminine nouns that end "-ee" (in the Nominative Singular case), in the plural the ending becomes ""ες". Example: η τροφή οι τροφές. There are some exceptions, for example : η πόλη - οι πόλεις
  • Neuter nouns that end in "-o" (in the Nominative Singular case) are always spelled with omicron "o".
  • Neuter nouns in singular that end in "-ee" (in the Nominative Singular case) are always spelled with an "ι". Example: το παιδί.
  • Neuter Nouns that end in "-os" in plural end in eta "η". Example: το έλος, τα έλη
  • There are some feminine nouns that end in "ω". They are names and do not have a plural.
