Οι Χρόνοι των Ρημάτων
The Tenses of the Verbs (1)

Lesson 31 Part 1 - Greek Grammar

When we speak, we don't always speak about what we are doing now
We speak about our past or our future, and many times we even describe if what we we are doing or will do, was or will be happening continuously or not.
This is the verbs' job. We use the verbs in a way to show us when we took the action, and for how long. We use the tenses of the verbs (Οι Χρόνοι των Ρημάτων) .

Sounds confusing doesn't it? The next few lessons will show you that it really isn't. The tenses that we will examine are:

Table 31.1.1
TenseExplanation/Example
Present Tense - Ενεστώτας Shows us something that is happening NOW!
Example: Εγώ παίζω (I play)- I play now
Past Continuous - Παρατατικός Shows something that was happening in the PAST continuously
Example: εγώ έπαιζα (I was playing) - I was playing in the past but not for a moment, but continuously.
Past Simple - Αόριστος Shows that something happened in the PAST (not continuously) and is finished.
Example: έπαιξα (I played) - I played but now I'm done.
Future Continuous -
Εξακολουθητικός Μέλλοντας
Shows an action that will happen in the future continuously.
Example: Θα παίζω (I will be playing)- I'll be playing for some (longer) time.
Future Simple -
Στιγμιαίος Μέλλοντας
Shows that something will happen in the future for a short period.
Example: Θα παίξω (I'll play)- I'll play in the future for a (short) period of time.
Present Perfect -
Παρακείμενος
Shows that an action took place recently and now is finished.
Εχω παίξει (I have played)- I have played this game before (I have played and I'm finished now!).
Past Perfect -
Υπερσυντέλικος
Shows that an action happened in the past before some other action.
Example: Είχα παίξει (I had played)- I had played my game before I went to the movies.
Future Perfect -
Συντελεσμένος Μέλλοντας
Shows that something will be completed in the future before something else takes place (some other action).
Example: Θα έχω παίξει (Ι'll have played)- I shall have played my game by the time the movie starts.

The Present, Past, and Future Perfect tenses use the auxiliary verb.
-Έχω (I have)- and the Infinite (Απαρέμφατο).
We will examine the auxiliary verbs later (they are simple!), and the infinite when we study the Moods (οι εγκλίσεις).

Please understand that as much as I try to simplify the Grammar, it will still be confusing at times. As you get more familiar with the language things will look easier.
Some people may think that many rules and explanations seem incomplete.
This is because I'm trying to simplify everything, as much as I can.

Check our Extras Directory for examples of conjugation of the verbs in different tenses.
