The verbs είμαι (Be)
and έχω (have)
are called Auxiliary Verbs
(Τα Βοηθητικά Ρήματα)
because they help to form different tenses.
The following tables show the conjugation of the Present and Past Continuous
of these verbs.

The verb "είμαι" has Past Simple tense.
It takes it from the Verb "υπάρχω (exist)",
and that tense is "υπήρξα".

The verb "έχω" does not have a Past Simple tense.
