Greek Mythology - The Trojan War

Chapter 22

Aias and Hector

In English

The Trojan army started once more to fight with the Greeks. Hector and Paris who were in the city, came out to join the war. Seeing their heroes, the Trojans started to fight with all their might. The Greeks once again, were retreating.

Athena was watching from Olympus. She left to go help the Greeks and on her way she saw Apollo. They agreed to end the bloodshed by putting Hector to fight with Aias. The foreteller Helinos, after telling Priam what the gods wanted, went and found his brother Hector. Hector heard his brother and ordered the Trojans to stop fighting.

Agamemnon seeing Hector's move, stopped his army also. Hector spoke and invited one of the Greek heroes to fight with him. The Greeks heard him. Nobody wanted to fight with Troy's biggest hero. Menelaus wanted to go but Agamemnon held him back. He was afraid that his brother might be killed. Finally they decided that Aias, the son of Telamonas, would fight.

Aias was the tallest and strongest man among the Greeks. He was also very brave and an excellent warrior. Hector threw his spear first. Aias defended himself with his shield. Aias now threw his spear and it penetrated Hector's armor on the side. It tore his clothes but it did not harm him. They took again their spears and Hector hit Aias' shield once more. Aias hurt Hector lightly in the throat. Hector took a rock and threw it at Aias. Aias did the same, and the stone broke Hector's shield and wounded him.
God Apollo who saw his favorite warrior down, ran and lifted him up. Everybody pulled their swords ready to fight, but Hector stopped them. It was getting dark and the Greeks and the Trojans agreed to stop the fighting for the night.

Hector took off his sword and offered it as a gift and a reminder of this fight to Aias. Aias gave him his belt.

The Greeks and the Trojans were both happy on that night. The Greeks, because they were glad that a warrior like Aias was with them, and the Trojans, because Hector returned safely from this fight.
