Perseus and Polydectes
Ο Περσέας και o Πολυδέκτης

Greek Mythology - Perseus

In English

When Polydectes (Πολυδέκτης), Diktys' brother and king of the island, saw Danae he wanted her for his wife. She hated him because he was not a good man. Perseus, now a grown man, defended his mother. Polydectes backed out. He realized that with Perseus in the way he will not be able to marry Danae, but if he were to die then it would not be a problem.

Polydectes thought of a trick. He called Perseus and he asked him to bring him the head of the Gorgon Medusa (Γοργόνα Μέδουσα).
"If you are the son of Zeus, this task should not be a problem for you" he said.
Perseus stared at Polydectes and accepted the challenge.

Perseus had to travel west, to the end of the world. This is where the Gorgons were. Three of them, all sisters. The two of them were immortal, but the one, Medusa, was mortal. All three had tough scales on their body. Their hands were copper like and their nails pointed and tough as steel. They had snakes on their head instead of hair, and wings on their back. Their face was so evil that if you would look at them you would turn into stone.

The hero had to complete a very difficult task. But the Olympian gods would not leave him without help...
