The Island of the Cyclops

Greek Mythology - The Odyssey

Chapter 4 - Part 2

In English

In the morning the Cyclop woke up, took two more of Odysseus' companions and ate them. Then he took his flock out and closed the entrance with the rock. Odysseus was thinking of how they could get away. In the cave was a long piece of wood. He took it and he, with the help of his remaining crew, made it pointed with their swords. They were waiting...
When night fell, Polyphemus came back to the cave. Odysseus approached him and he offered him wine. Polyphemus drank it and asked for more. After a while he was drunk.
He asked Odysseus what his name was. Odysseus answered him that his name was Nobody.
"Well, Nobody, I'll eat you last." said Polyphemus. He drank another glass of wine and fell asleep. Then Odysseus and the rest of his companions took the long piece of wood, they heated it up in the fire and pushed it into the Cyclop's eye.

He screamed and started to ask the help of the other Cyclops.
"Nobody is killing me." he screamed.
The Cyclops thought that he was losing his mind and did not pay any attention. At dawn, Polyphemus still crying from the pain, rolled the rock. This was the opportunity that Odysseus was waiting for. He tied up his companions under the belly of the huge sheep. He grabbed one also. Polyphemus was at the opening of the cave trying to catch Odysseus.

Our hero was out of the cave and going towards his ship. The Cyclop went towards the beach. In the meantime Odysseus' ship was leaving the island. While they were leaving Odysseus screamed:
"The one that took your eye was me, Odysseus the king of Ithaca."

Polephemus started to beg his father Poseidon to punish Odysseus. He grabbed a big rock and threw it in the sea. The rock missed the boat. They arrived at the island where the other ships were. They cried about their lost companions and performed sacrifices to the gods. The next day they sailed with the hope that soon they would be back in Ithaca.
